The Mode of Oxidation of Certain Fatty Acids with Branched Chains.

چکیده
Our knowledge of the mechanism by which the simpler fatty acids with branched chains are oxidised in the body is still very meagre. This is no doubt due to the difficulty in interpreting the experimental results so far obtained, in any way that will lead to a generalisation such as we possess for the normal fatty acids; namely, f-oxidation followed by removal of the two end carbon atoms of the acid. This difficulty may be illustrated by reference to the behaviour of a-methvlbutyric acid and a-ethylbutyric acid. In the diabetic organism the former gives rise to increased " acetone body " production [Baer and Blum, 1906] whereas the latter yields, in part at any rate, methyl propyl ketone [Blum and Koppel, 1911]. Similarly a-methylpropionic acid (isobutyric acid), gives rise to extra glucose formation [Ringer, Frankel and Jonas, 1913] and traces of d-lactic acid [Baer and Blum, 1906], a result interpreted by Baer and Blum as indicating that lactic acid is a probable intermediate stage in the oxidation of isobutyric acid, the methyl group being replaced by a hydroxyl group, thus:

Metabolic Effects of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Chickens: A Review
Chicken has been used as a suitable model for lipid metabolism studies, because dietary modifications especially dietary fat type can change chicken body composition. Fats act as a condense source of energy and certain fatty acids such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are required for both animal and human health. The n-3 PUFAs, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic ...

Fatty acid beta-oxidation was investigated in highly purified mitochondrial and peroxisomal preparations from rat liver. Under isotonic conditions, pristanic and homophytanic acid beta-oxidation in purified peroxisomes was severalfold greater compared to the oxidation in purified mitochondria. Branched chain fatty acid beta-oxidation in purified mitochondria was very low, and the oxidation was ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Omega Fatty Acids on Bcl-2 Gene Expression and Protein Production in Cancerous Gastric Tissue
Introduction: Gastric cancer is the fourth common cancer and the second leading cause of death from cancer worldwide. Omega fatty acids are a group of non-saturated fatty acids of long chains derive from linolenic, linoleic and oleic fatty acids. The current study aimed at examining the possible effects of oral administration of omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids on gastric cancer cell apoptosis in...
متن کاملThe CoA esters of 2-methyl-branched chain fatty acids and of the bile acid intermediates di- and trihydroxycoprostanic acids are oxidized by one single peroxisomal branched chain acyl-CoA oxidase in human liver and kidney.
Rat liver peroxisomes contain three acyl-CoA oxidases: palmitoyl-CoA oxidase, which oxidizes the CoA esters of straight chain fatty acids and prostaglandins; pristanoyl-CoA oxidase, which oxidizes the CoA esters of 2-methyl-branched fatty acids (e.g. pristanic acid); and trihydroxycoprostanoyl-CoA oxidase, which oxidizes the CoA esters of the bile acid intermediates di- and trihydroxycoprostani...
